What is it? We work together for a month on our own series concepts in a goal-oriented structure. In doing so, we'll put our material into a meaningful order, and give it the shape that will allow for the further development of season arcs and individual episodes.
The dramaturgical foundation is tested and formed, as we exchange collegial feedback and receive individual guidance from ScriptCoaches.
This ScriptDock training offers a variety of text examples from series that have already been filmed; in German and in English; both bibles and pilots; in multiple genres.
The weekly assignments provide a work structure that ensures YOU WRITE IT :-)
Call to action for screenwriters who create their own series!
The series training is an effective path to build the engine for a series in 4 weeks via 4 steps.
Each week we work through one assignment and one dramaturgical level. The training provides texts* of existing series to read, which exemplify the respective step.
Thanks to the structured work process, a broad variety of text examples*, and individualized feedback, this training is an effective shaper of your own series concept. The constructive feedback from colleagues and trainers helps you to revise your drafts for more clarity. Not least because of the time frame, your idea develops more quickly into a result on paper.
This works regardless of where you are at with your series concept. Wether you just have an idea or you already have a lot of material, a long narrative like a series needs a solid engine.
This engine is of great value in further development, as it basically drives every scene.
Know your WORLD Know your TONALITY Know your CHARACTERS Know your central CONFLICT
What is the structure?
Start: Present the basic idea for your series as a LOGLINE!
READ: Each week new pilots and bibles of successful series are made available, describing both scenically and descriptively specific worlds, introducing the particular tone, the main characters, and the central conflict. Various genres. Read by choice.
Week 1: WORLD.
Assignment: write an introduction to the WORLD of your series (about 2 pages text).
Even if this world seems to be obvious to you, please draw a precise picture of this world for the readers, not just what it looks like, but what shapes it from within, and where lies the power. Who pulls the strings here, where are the traps, and what thrives best in this world?
EACH WEEK we upload the texts to the ScriptDock Training and read each others' drafts. It's a safe place to exchange constructive feedback, guided by experienced trainers.
Week 2: TONALITY.
Assignment: write a scene in the tonality of your series (about 2-3 pages of scenic dialogue).
Here your characters can warm up, the scene is not yet within the plot. Develop the storytelling voice! How do you view this world? With what basic feeling do you narrate?
We express out voice playfully in a scene. How does an exchange of typical inhabitants of the world sound? Where is the comedy/ the abyss/ how does the tension built up?
Week 3: MAIN CHARACTERS.
Assignment: introduce the main characters of your series (about two pages of text).
Describe the necessary transformations your lead characters will undergo. Or if not, where their static quality lie. Take into account your tonality and world.
Week 4: CONFLICT.
Task: write a scene deep in the conflict, make it very clear (about 2- 3 pages of scenic dialogue).
During the scene the central conflict of your main characters should change decisively (from positive to negative, or vice versa).
Conclusion: Now revise the LOGLINE from the 1st week.
And there you go! Polish and expand this into a pitch, and if you feel ready, present it at the next online pitch event here at scriptDock. Our recommendation: use the next scriptDock screenwriting marathon as an opportunity to write the pilot.
If you do this with commitment, you will have the ingredients for a good pitch by the end of the month!
The training will be held as an interactive online workshop within Scriptdock. Only participants will have access to reading, uploading, and commenting on colleagues' posts.
* These sample texts are bibles and pilots in various genres from well-known international series. German and English reading samples. More English ones, actually. Reading is done according to own preference.

Committed writers have left this training with great results. We learned from it: If you want results, raise the stakes :-)
We start the training with a live call to introduce our projects and meet fellow writers, which is always the most fun! Check the calendar for dates.
